With the foreshore waves crashing onto the rocks with a splattering roar, golden beaches stretching along the coastline and sun glimmering through the cloudy skies – we pause for a moment to appreciate Sandy Place’s picturesque surrounds. With 2019 coming to an end, there are many stories we want to share with you about Sandy Place’s thrilling year. During the winter months, with the winter sun setting over the shores, St Lucia was fortunate to have Humpback Whales visit the Elephant Coast, to give birth to their calves, while a rare and exhilarating sighting of Orcas was spotted just off the Maphelane mid-sea waters.

St Lucia is renowned for Hippos wandering through the streets each dusky evening and your home-away-from-home Resort-town still has several hippos dawdling along the streets, “window shopping”, at night. The Fisherman’s Paradise did not disappoint and during the annual Snoek Derby in June, the fishing charters had plenty to smile about, with prolific Natal Snoek and Yellowfin Tuna in the waters. With many happy holiday memories made through the year, read the exciting ‘Sandy’ Stories, filled with treasures, set in the heart of St Lucia.

A special moment captured in time: A pod of Orcas was spotted (and photographed) just off the Maphelane mid-sea waters during August.

Humpback Whales
HUMPBACK WHALES
The mighty Humpback Whales migrated to the
St Lucia coastal waters, to give birth, during the winter months – what an extraordinarily wonderful event!
Hippos
HIPPOS
St Lucia, being synonymous with Hippo sightings in town, was not a let-down this season. Several Hippos still wander the streets each night, routinely “window shopping”.

Snoek Derby

The annual Snoek Derby, which took place from the 14th to the 17th of June 2019, was yet again a fan favourite. With screaming reels and back-breaking retrieves, the fishing charters had plenty to smile about. Great catches were listed throughout the weekend, ranging from Natal Snoek, Yellowfin Tunas and a few exceptional Dorados.
Well done, Velia Tonkin! Velia caught an amazing Yellowfin Tuna weighing in at 43.71kg during the Furuno Snoek Derby 2019. What a proud moment for this empowering female angler – fantastic!

Harley Davidson Rally

The annual Harley Davidson Rally took place from the 14th to the 17th of June 2019. There were an estimated 350 motorcycles in the town. Several guests and visitors took photos of the smooth tourers or monster-like machines. Roars could be heard from miles away, as the rally-goers entered the town in the evening.

The Rally, being the longest-running Harley-Davidson rally in South Africa, with the first St Lucia Rally taking place in 1996, is loved by many Harley Davidson enthusiasts and is a not-to-be-missed event.
Gideons Bibles

We want to thank the personnel from Gideon’s International – they offered the Resort a set of new Bibles, which replaced the old ones in the units. In addition to that, they also offered each staff member a Bible.

Heritage Day

The NSRI hosted a Fun Run on Heritage Day, which was open to all of St Lucia’s locals and visitors. A variety of races were on offer, ranging from the 6km fun run/walk to the more strenuous 21km run. The day was topped off by embracing National Braai Day with a braai in the park. All proceeds went to the NSRI.

NSRI is a charity staffed by volunteers who are on call, day and night throughout the year. Their goal is to prevent drowning through education, preventative measures and rescue.

All of the dads received a bottle of Homemade Peri-Peri sauce, as a Father’s Day gift, from the Resort. International Beach Clean-up

International Beach Clean-Up Day

Sandy Place, a proud supporter of International Beach Clean-Up Day, participated in this international initiative on the 21st of September 2019. An appreciative applause to all our visitors who joined us to clean our beaches and oceans of plastic and debris.
Nursery

Nursery

It’s here, the Resorts very own nursery! It's small, but so are the prices. The nursery has been set-up in aid of African Blessings and Jochebed Children's Home, to whom all profits will be donated. The nursery has only started, but already has small bamboo palms and Euphorbia tirucalli, better known as “Firesticks”, on offer. Guests can make an offer per plant, with the minimum cost being R10 per plant.
