An adult crabeater seal, native to Antarctica, enjoyed his visit to uShaka Marine World back in February, before flying off to Bayworld in Port Elizabeth and eventually returning home.
The lost seal was found resting on rocks at Ramsgate Beach on the South Coast by local walkers. The SPCA Lower South branch brought the rare seal to uShaka Marine World for observation and possible treatment.
Although resident veterinarian, Dr Francois Lampen, found him to be in good overall condition, he was understandably stressed. The coast of Antarctica is almost totally devoid of human habitation and, as such, these seals have not evolved to fear humans – which is not necessarily a good thing.
The staff at uShaka Marine World decided to name him Ragnar after the legendary Viking - Ragnar Lothbrok.
Did you know?
Crabeater seals do not eat crabs. 90% of their diet consists of Antarctic krill. The remaining 10% of their diet is squid and fish.
