Declared a World Biosphere Reserve (UNESCO) in 2015, the Magaliesberg is the 4th oldest mountain range on Earth! Formed some 2.3 billion years ago, the range is estimated to be 100 times older than Mount Everest! This ancient mountain range was home to some of the earliest human inhabitants on earth, and the Sterkfontein Caves lie just to the south of the main range, by 25km.
A literal natural wonder, the Magaliesberg area is home to more than 300 bird species, over 130 species of trees, over 100 types of grasses, and a fascinating array of flowers, ferns and fungi; as well as 90 species of mammals, 20 species of lizards, 17 species of frogs and more than 20 species of snakes (most of which are harmless)! Leopards can still be found in the secluded kloofs and ravines, and many raptor species inhabit the area and can be seen soaring on high, above the mountain cliffs.
