With over 300 trout stocked each month from April to September, our dams are a fly fisher’s dream. From Rainbow to Brown trout, weighing at least 1.2 kg each, there are currently around 1,900 fish waiting to be caught. Whether you're new to the sport or a seasoned angler, our expert Fish Bailiffs, with 17 years of experience, are here to offer guidance and support. This season, we celebrated a new Rainbow trout record of 4.2 kg, and with icy mornings turning into bright, warm days, the fishing has been nothing short of fantastic!

Tucked in the Komati Gorge, just 31 km from Carolina, this hidden gem is surrounded by rivers, hills, and serene beauty. The Komati River and Swart Spruit feed eight trout dams, while Oom Fanie’s Spruit offers perfect picnic and swim spots.
Explore two stunning waterfalls via a 1.2 km hike or a scenic two-hour horse ride. Whether trekking or riding, the falls and their towering rock walls make for an unforgettable adventure.

Introducing the newly-added eco-site at Doornkop: the Black Pearl Rock Pools. Once hidden, this natural wonder is now accessible by sedan via a newly completed road. These serene pools form in winter as the Swart Spruit slows, offering a peaceful spot for swimming and sunbathing. Cleaned and ready for adventurers, the pools are fondly known as "The Fountain of Youth" by our regulars. Secluded and inviting, they provide the perfect escape: just be ready for a quick cover-up if a vehicle approaches!

At Doornkop, guests can enjoy a variety of exciting activities, including self-drive tours, hiking, and horse rides to our stunning waterfall. Many visitors spend hours picnicking and soaking in the tranquil sounds of nature by the falls.
We are excited to reintroduce our Game Drives, led by Elias, our knowledgeable maintenance supervisor. For R200 per person, you can embark on a two-hour drive covering 40 km through our beautiful 200-ha reserve. Enjoy comfortable viewing from our game viewer, with stops at popular picnic spots and streams along the way.
For the more adventurous, our stage 3-rated 4x4 trails span 21 km across the 2000-hectare farm, offering stunning views and excellent game-viewing opportunities. Book your game drive at Reception, and Elias will guide you through the reserve, sharing his expertise. Guests can also enjoy spotting birds, animals, and trees, turning the adventure into a friendly family competition!

The Tennis Court has been repaired and upgraded, now featuring new lighting for evening play. Guests can enjoy complimentary rackets and balls available at Reception.

Swimming Pools
The main building's swimming pools have been refurbished, offering a refreshing escape on warm summer days. Guests can relax by the pool and enjoy a delightful braai with family and friends.

Veld Fires
During the dry season, we completed fire breaks of ten meters to prevent veld fires threatening the Doornkop Reserve. With last year's dry winter and limited rainfall, we were well-prepared for any potential runaway veld fires.

Heritage Day
This year, Heritage Day was joyfully celebrated at Doornkop! Our dedicated staff dressed up to ensure every guest felt cherished and part of the festivities. As with all special occasions, from Women’s Day to Christmas, the spirit of community and culture was vibrant and alive. Heritage Day was a wonderful reminder of our rich traditions, and we look forward to celebrating together throughout the year!

On September 30, 2024, Doornkop experienced a major windstorm that caused significant damage across the reserve. Many thatched roofs on units were compromised, with some losing entire roof ridges. The Resort Manager's carport was also mangled and destroyed.
We are happy to report that all repair work have been completed.
|
|
|
|
|
|
With the recent rainfall at the Reserve, we are happy to report that the dams are full and the river flowing strong. Our animals and veld are also thriving with the fresh growth coming up.
In the colourful words of Bossie, the Resort Manager, "the field is singing, the birds are chirping and the animals jumping with joy after the rain."
