GAME VIEWING HIDES     RESORT UPGRADES     SOLAR UPDATES    SPECIAL HOLIDAYS    NOTICES

Another cycle of sunrises and sunsets has completed its journey over the Crocodile River; the changing seasons have rejuvenated the landscape, while the overflowing river, a lifeline for the wildlife it sustains, has continued its timeless ebb and flow. The first half of 2024 has marked a new beginning, instilling a sense of wonder and appreciation for the familiar sights and sounds at Ngwenya Lodge. The lodge has continued to welcome guests, indulging in joyful holiday moments, spreading joy from one chalet to another, fostering an environment of a tranquil escape. Join us as we pause to reflect on the recent happenings at Ngwenya Lodge.

At Ngwenya Lodge, guests have the opportunity to explore several strategically positioned game-viewing hides offering breath-taking views of the surrounding wildlife.

Crocodile Sandbank
Crocodile Sandbank

South of the restaurant and viewing deck, guests will discover the Crocodile Sandbank game-viewing hide. A guided handrail and path guide visitors through the dense vegetation, opening up to a view of the Crocodile River. This lookout point is situated along the perimeter, offering uninterrupted vistas into the Kruger National Park.

Top sightings here include:
Elephants, crocodiles, and lions.

Elephant Crossing
Elephant Crossing

Situated north of the restaurant and viewing deck, the Elephant Crossing game-viewing hide is ideally located. Elevated on stilts, it overlooks a reed bank and the floodplains of the Crocodile River. The thick vegetation surrounding the hide makes it an excellent spot for birdwatching.

Top sightings here include:
Elephants, waterbucks, and various bird species.

Lions Crossing
Lion's Crossing

The southernmost game-viewing hide within the Resort is Lion's Crossing. Guests descend a short flight of stairs to reach this protected lookout, which offers stunning views of the Crocodile River. The river's shallow pools and juts of rock create minor rapids that add to the scenic intrigue, as herds of smaller antelope come to drink.

Top sightings here include:
Elephants, hippopotamuses, and various antelope species

Storm Weathers

In March 2024, a significant storm unleashed a torrent of rain, amounting to 99mm within just 24 hours. This deluge caused the river to swell to high levels, ultimately leading to the closure of several gravel roads within the Kruger National Park. The heavy rainfall and resulting high water levels created hazardous conditions, prompting park authorities to take preventive measures to ensure the safety of visitors and preserve the integrity of the park's infrastructure.

Progress Update on Alternative Electricity Supply Solutions

Since February 2020, we have been actively seeking an alternative electricity supply solution to address the ESKOM supply challenges faced by the Shareholders of Ngwenya 3 Share Block (Pty) Ltd and Ngwenya 4 Share Block (Pty) Ltd. Numerous discussions have been conducted exploring various energy supply options ranging from generators to solar power. The decision to focus on solar energy represents a significant step towards sustainability for the Ngwenya community.

Through careful planning, thorough analysis, and proactive decision-making, the Board has demonstrated its steadfast commitment to ensuring the sustainability and efficiency of the Ngwenya Share Block Companies. We are dedicated to pursuing innovative solutions that not only mitigate the immediate impacts of load shedding but also foster our long-term prosperity and resilience.

March 2024 Update

As part of our proactive communication initiative, we distributed surveys to our valued Shareholders in March 2023. We received numerous responses from Shareholders offering their expertise and services. We responded to these emails, conducted discussions, and arranged meetings with service providers after performing due diligence.
We are pleased to announce that, as of March 2024, the Board of Directors have approved the Solar proposal. The system will have a size of 991kWp with a 1500kWh Battery Backup. This marks a significant milestone in our journey towards a sustainable energy solution.

Solar Update

  • Procurement and Installation: Solar assets are currently being procured, and installation is set to begin in August 2024.
  • Engineering and Contracting: Electrical infrastructure engineers and contractors have been appointed through a tender process. Transformers are being procured and built to specification. On-site installation is scheduled to begin in August 2024.
  • Eskom Coordination: We are in close communication with Eskom to consolidate the six incoming lines into a single 2MVA connection, which is due in October 2024.
  • Civil Works: Civil contractors have been appointed, with ground clearing and civil works set to commence in July 2024.
  • Health and Safety: Health and Safety files are being finalized in preparation for breaking ground and installation.

Our Commitment

The journey towards a sustainable and reliable electricity supply is a priority for the Ngwenya Share Block Companies. We remain committed to transparency and collaboration with our Shareholders throughout this process. Your continued support and engagement are invaluable as we work together to build a resilient and prosperous future for our community. Stay tuned for further updates and thank you for your continued trust and partnership.
